Hydrogenerator Service for Hydropower Plants
Hydropower plants in Mexico and Central America operate aging hydrogenerator fleets where insulation life, salient pole integrity and excitation system obsolescence are the daily operational concerns. TEMISA Power Gen serves vertical and horizontal hydrogenerators 1 to 100 MVA for utilities, IPPs and mini-hydro operators with rewinding, rehabilitation and AVR retrofit under CFE LAPEM W4200-12, IEEE 115, IEEE 421 and IEC 60034.

What hydropower operators are solving today
Most installed hydrogenerators in Mexico and Central America are 40 to 70 years old. Insulation, salient pole rotors, excitation and bearings are at the end of their original design life and require rehabilitation or rewinding to extend service for another two decades.
- Aging hydrogenerator fleets — many plants are 40 to 70 years old with insulation life nearing exhaustion
- Salient pole rotors with mechanical stress concentrated in pole-to-rim attachments and pole face windings
- Long shutdown windows during dry season — hydraulic, electrical and mechanical work concurrent
- Remote plant access where every spare part and field crew is a logistics project
- Excitation system obsolescence — analog regulators replaced by digital AVRs under IEEE 421
- Hydraulic vibration coupling into the generator — bearings, shaft alignment and rotor balance
- CFE, CRE and Central America regulator audits for plant rehabilitation and life extension

FAQ
Frequently asked questions — Hydropower generator service
Preguntas que recibimos con frecuencia. ¿No encuentras la tuya? Escríbenos a ventas@temisa.mx.
Do you rewind salient pole rotors for hydrogenerators?
Yes. Salient pole rewinding is one of our core capabilities. We rewind pole coils with Class F insulation, repair rim attachments, inspect retaining rings and dynamically balance the rotor before reassembly. The complete process is documented under CFE LAPEM W4200-12 with field witness or in-shop acceptance protocol per the client's preference.
Can you retrofit analog AVRs to digital excitation systems?
Yes. We have experience replacing legacy analog automatic voltage regulators with digital AVR platforms compliant with IEEE 421.5 (excitation system models). The retrofit includes commissioning, parameter tuning and acceptance testing with grid step-response documentation. Where applicable, we add a Power System Stabilizer (PSS) for dynamic stability.
Do you work in remote Central American hydro plants?
Yes. We have documented service experience in hydro plants in Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica. Field crews are mobilized with in-country logistics for lodging, transport and customs clearance for tools and instruments. Reporting in English or Spanish under ISO 9001:2015.
What MVA range do you support for hydrogenerators?
We service hydrogenerators from 1 MVA (mini-hydro) up to 100 MVA (large reservoir plants) under CFE LAPEM W4200-12. For larger units, we coordinate with the OEM or partner workshops for hot-spots that require specific OEM tooling, with TEMISA Power Gen acting as integrator.
Do you support hydraulic-induced vibration analysis?
Yes. We perform vibration analysis under ISO 10816 to differentiate hydraulic-induced vibration (vortex, rough load, hydraulic resonance) from mechanical-electrical vibration (rotor unbalance, shaft misalignment, electromagnetic forces). The diagnostic report identifies the root cause and recommends corrective action coordinated with the hydraulic and civil teams.
